Sourcing in China

Finding the right supplier starts with the right product and market knowledge

Manufacturing in China is highly regionalised. For many product categories, manufacturers, raw material suppliers, component producers and specialised subcontractors are concentrated in specific production clusters. Knowing where a product is made, how the local supply chain is structured and which suppliers are genuinely suited to your product and volumes can make a significant difference.

Scale Roads as your sourcing agent in China

Scale Roads supports professional importers, wholesalers and brand owners in finding and selecting suppliers in China. As a sourcing agent in China, our team on the ground combines local market knowledge, product experience and our existing supplier network with targeted research into new manufacturers.

The objective is not simply to find the lowest price, but to identify suppliers that fit the commercial and operational requirements of the project.

Sourcing is more than finding a supplier

A factory may look like a strong candidate on paper. A competitive quotation, professional sales team and extensive product range say relatively little about whether that supplier is actually suitable for your specific order.

That is why our sourcing process looks beyond price alone.

  • Product and manufacturing capabilities;
  • Fit with product specifications and required materials;
  • Relevant manufacturing experience;
  • Order volumes and MOQs;
  • Pricing level and cost structure;
  • Customisation and packaging capabilities;
  • Communication and commercial terms;
  • Supplier location and the surrounding supply chain;
  • Available certifications and documentation where relevant;
  • Suitability for a long-term supplier relationship.

Based on this, we work towards a suitable proposal that incorporates our market knowledge, supplier experience and assessment of the available manufacturing options. This gives you a concrete basis for determining the next step in your purchasing process.

Production clusters make a difference

China is not one uniform manufacturing market.

Over the years, many industries have become concentrated in specific cities and regions. These areas are home not only to finished-goods manufacturers, but also to suppliers of raw materials, components, packaging, tooling and specialised manufacturing processes.

This ecosystem can have a significant impact on manufacturability, lead times, flexibility, product expertise and ultimately cost.

That is why we do not simply look for a factory that can make the product. We look at where the relevant product expertise and supply chain are located, and which manufacturers within that market are best suited to the project.

For new or technically different product categories, we expand our network through targeted supplier research using the same approach.

Experience across different product categories

Through years of sourcing and production projects in China, we have built an established network of manufacturers and specialised suppliers.

We have extensive experience in areas including:

  • Cookware & kitchenware: cookware, kitchen products, metal and plastic components, coatings and related packaging.
  • Indoor furniture: furniture and interior products, different material combinations, finishes, upholstery and packaging.
  • Packaging: consumer packaging, paper packaging, boxes, bags and various forms of custom packaging.

We also work across a wide range of other product categories. When a product falls outside our existing supplier network, we conduct targeted supplier research within the relevant manufacturing regions in China.

Our existing network is therefore a starting point, not a limitation.

How our sourcing process works

1. Define the product and purchasing requirements

We start by defining the product specifications, required materials, volumes, packaging, quality level, relevant certifications and commercial requirements. The clearer these requirements are, the more effectively potential suppliers can be assessed and compared.

2. Market and supplier selection

We determine which manufacturing regions and suppliers in China are relevant to the product. We combine our existing network with local market research and targeted outreach to new manufacturers.

3. Compare and validate

Potential suppliers are assessed on more than price. We also consider product expertise, technical capabilities, MOQs, capacity, communication, documentation and the practical feasibility of the project. Where necessary, additional questions, drawings or technical requirements are discussed directly with the factory.

4. Proposal and next steps

Based on the sourcing process, you receive a suitable proposal that incorporates our knowledge of the market, suppliers and manufacturing possibilities. From there, we determine the appropriate next step towards samples, validation or production. The process can then be extended with services such as a Factory Audit, Sample Validation or Order Kick-off before a production order is released.

From supplier selection to controlled production

Finding a supplier is the beginning of a China manufacturing process, not the end.

Once a supplier has been selected, important decisions still need to be made around samples, specifications, contractual agreements, timelines and quality.

That is why sourcing at Scale Roads can be combined with our on-site services and production management packages. The same local team involved during supplier selection can remain close to what happens at the factory once the project moves into production.

This reflects how we approach purchasing from China: not simply finding a supplier, but ensuring that good decisions at the start translate into controlled execution on the ground.

Who is our sourcing service for?

Our sourcing service is designed for companies purchasing professionally and structurally from China, for example when they:

  • Want to introduce a new product category;
  • Want to replace or benchmark an existing supplier;
  • Want to search beyond their current supplier network;
  • Require specific manufacturing capabilities or materials;
  • Have limited visibility into the relevant supplier market in China;
  • Want to compare potential suppliers professionally.

If you have already selected a supplier and primarily need an independent assessment of the factory, a Factory Audit may be the more appropriate first step.
